New Versions of old Cards

So, we’ve all heard of the infamous Jaqen H’ghar. The “every-house-affiliated-every-house-keyword-monster” that pretty much got banned from tournament use before it was even cut from the print sheet.

Same with the equally controversial decision to ban Compelled by the Rock. A Lannister attachment control option? Can’t have that… BAN!

What some of you may or may not have heard of is, in the reprint of the “A Clash of Arms” cycle from the AGoT LCG, they revamped both of these cards to “nerf” them, and make them “viable” for tournament play… yes, these new versions are legal in tournaments until the FFG gods say otherwise.

Let’s look at these two cards and figure out what got better, what stayed the same, and what got worse:

First, let’s see Jaqen:

(and yes, I know, the first image is better, but I had to take the second one in low res from my phone. The Compelled pictures are gonna be the same)

Alright… both of these are affiliated to every house and are 5g tri-cons with 3STR and a learned crest. Not terrible, but not the best as far as gold curve. Plenty of economy needed in any deck wishing to run either one. Both have the Ally trait. *gags* This is not something I wanna see on a 5g character, reducers or not.

Here’s where they start to differ… the old, banned version has every house-specific keyword in the game, but no others (no renown, no deadly, no stealth)… he also has the text “Jaqen H’ghar gets +1 STR for each power on him.” This is insane if you can keep him on the board. No wonder FFG decided to preemptively ban him.

As for the new version, there are no printed keywords. Instead, he has the following text box “Any Phase: Discard 1 power from your house to give Jaqen H’ghar a keyword of your choice, until the end of the phase.” I can think of a few good ones… Vigilant, Immune to Opponents’ card effects, no attachments, vengeful, renown, stealth, deadly. In a rush deck with the proper economy, he’s a beast. Yes, I know he doesn’t have a flag. Come on people, don’t angle-shoot. We all know that he was intended to be unique. ONE COPY WITH DUPES ONLY, PLEASE.

My verdict: Those who use their economy well and can get a bit of rush at first to settle in for the long haul will enjoy this new version. Though, if you’re getting enough power to turn him into a powerhouse (that was punny, right?), you’re probably not wanting to spend it on his ability… and 5g for a 3STR, even with tri-con status is a little pricy for a vanilla character.

Now Compelled by the Rock:

Both of these are Lannister only, and give some attachment manipulation. This is the only way they are the same, though.

The banned version lets you choose 2 different charaters (could both be yours or one of yours and one opponent’s or one each from 2 different opponents), and let’s you move an attachment from one of those characters to another, taking control of it if you choose. Doesn’t seem too overpowered for me, but the designers had a field day… “Lannister with attachment control?! They don’t need that. Doesn’t follow the flavor.” So, they banned it from tournament play :(

The new version…. can we say “nerfed…” no, not nerfed, neutered. You can move an attachment from one character to another as long as you control all 3 cards in the equation? Really? It’s okay, I guess, but not something to write home about.

My Verdict: Might see some play from die-hard Lannister fans, but I’ll stick with my x3 To be a Kraken, thank you.

So, there you have it. All this waiting and promising and reevaluating… What do you guys think?
